Deep Blue Sun churns out a hypnotic blend of deep funk, melodic rock, southern-fried soul and west coast psychedelia Versatile, well-crafted songwring, blazing lead guitar, driving keys, harmonies & a hot rhythm section meld together into a distinctive, dancable sound that will take you for a ride.

DBS was formed by songwriters John Marsh and Katie Moore. Deeply rooted Georgia jam rock scene, both were part of early incarnations of the Grapes before moving on to form Apple Peru. These days the band features the soaring, versatile guitar work of Matt Lynn, the funky R&B vocals of bassist Buddha, driving keyboards and a razor sharp rhythm section. DBS takes swampy funk and southern soul, and infuses it with west coast groove, tight turns, melody, dynamics and a good dose of improv. The goal: keep the crowd moving...the Get Down!

From Homegrown Music Network:
Deep Blue Sun's musical and emotional depth is perfectly captured on Live at Tree Sound.
The combination of high-quality studio recording equipment and personnel with the band's preferred concert environment helped them create the ultimate jam album situation. Their explosive improvisations and tight performances remain intact, bolstered by the energy of the stage and crowd, while the sound quality and instrument separation are raised a level above the normal "live album" recording practice. It's the only way this veteran band could have presented listeners with an accurate portrayal of their shows - utilize the most unique recording facility in the south to kill the studio and live birds with one very diverse stone.

The Georgia sextet boasts a telepathic grasp of each other's habits, and one gets the impression that they couldn't perform their material with any less tightness or vibrancy if they tried. Overall, the sound blends the stratospheric elements of Haight-inspired hippie rock with the muddy rawness of the southern blues, found in the dirty guitar tone, distinct organ swells, crashing drums, and vocal honesty. Songs like "Afterglow" and "Not Wastin' Time" are spiced with flavors as wide-ranging as New Orleans, Muscle Shoals, New York City, and San Francisco. The band moves seamlessly as one mass of psychedelic color - guitar solos are buoyed by entertaining drumming, keyboard work shades every aspect of each song in moody hues, and bass gives your mind a spin as each member locks into place with stunning precision, never overshadowing each other.

It's easy to see why Deep Blue Sun's shows are just as notorious for the communal atmosphere and everyone's-invited party vibe as they are for the pyrotechnic jam-rock found on Live at Tree Sound. Their tightness and professionalism make it easy for the audience to let go and ride their impressive waves of sound. -- Bryan Rodgers

Chattanooga Times Free Press
, July 2009:

Deep Blue Sun a soulful pleasure: Best act you probably didn’t see today — Deep Blue Sun. When this Atlanta-based group of psychedelic jammers opened up the Bud Light Stage, podcaster Sean Phipps and I were blown away.

Their combination of lead singer John Marsh’s soulful vocals and funky organ riffs with Matt Lynn’s impressive guitar shredding was incendiary. In some ways, they remind me of fellow Georgians the Allman Brothers Band and the soulful Mr. Randall Bramblett. - Casey Phillips

From Hittin' The Note Magazine, June 2008:

Every now and then, a band reaches beyond themselves and creates an album that transforms them into something else altogether. Deep Blue Sun have been a well-known and popular local jamband in Atlanta for years, but nobody had any reason to expect they would put out one of the best CDs of 2008.

Until now, that is. Their new CD, Live at Tree Sound, reveals a band that has the chops, the songs, and the vibe to compete with any band on the jam scene today. What group wouldn't love to have tunes like "Another Day" and "Jump in the Ocean" to stretch out and jam on? How many jambands would love to have a guitarist with the technique and tone of Matt Lynn, or the rhythm section of rock solid drummer Ted Hoyer and funky bassist Ben Hernandez?

The heart and soul of the band is the husband/wife team of John Marsh and Kate Moore, and their vocal harmonies and catchy songwriting are front and center on nearly every song. Following in the tradition of other famous musical couples like Delaney and Bonnie or Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, they share a musical bond that comes from deep in the soul. Don't believe me? Ask Derek Trucks Band drummer Yonrico Scott, who calls Deep Blue Sun "The best kept secret in the jamband world" and declares "I love jamming and vibing to Deep Blue Sun's funky grooves."
